✅ System Tray (Windows, Linux)

The Tray—also called the system tray on Windows or the notification area on Linux—lets you keep Wavebox running in the background even when you close the main window. You’ll continue to receive notifications, and can quickly open Wavebox or check unread items with just a click.

Accessing the Tray

  • Launch Wavebox
    • Open the Wavebox app as you normally would.
    • A small Wavebox icon will appear in your system tray (bottom-right on Windows, top/bottom panel on Linux).
  • Close or Minimize
    • When you click the X to close Wavebox, it remains running in the tray so you keep receiving notifications.
    • To quit Wavebox entirely, right-click the tray icon and select Quit.
  • Tray Mini Menu
    • Left-click the tray icon to open the Mini Menu (on most systems).
    • From the Mini Menu, you can see unread items, notifications, quickly compose an email, or restore the full Wavebox window.

Customizing the Tray Icon

  • Tray Icon Color
    • Each Wavebox profile can have a distinct tray icon color. Go to Settings > Appearance > Desktop Integration to pick a color that helps you easily identify each profile.
  • Click Action
    • By default, left-clicking the tray icon opens the Mini Menu. In Settings > Appearance > Desktop Integration, you can change it so that a click immediately restores Wavebox instead.
  • Close Button Behavior
    • To change what happens when you press X on the main window, open Settings > General and look for “Main window quit behavior.” You can choose to:
      • Hide to tray (default)
      • Minimize to taskbar
      • Quit the app

Troubleshooting

  • Tray Icon Missing on Linux
    • Some Linux desktop environments (e.g. GNOME) require an app indicator extension. Check your distro’s documentation to enable system tray icons.
  • Multiple Icons
    • Each Wavebox profile you run shows its own tray icon. Quit unused profiles or give each profile a unique color if you prefer them all open.
  • Notifications Not Updating
    • Make sure notifications are allowed in each app’s settings and in Wavebox. If Focus Mode is on, new alerts will be muted until you turn it off.
  • Quitting Completely
    • Right-click the tray icon and select Quit to fully close Wavebox. Simply clicking X hides Wavebox to the tray by default.
