πŸ”’ Password Manager

The built-in Password Manager securely saves and auto-fills your login details for websites and apps. We use the manager from Chromium, so it will be familiar to Chrome users. This guide explains how to use, import, and troubleshoot password management in Wavebox.

Overview

  • You can use any password extension in Wavebox, such as LastPass, 1Password, or Apple Keychain.
  • Wavebox Password Manager and Chrome's Password Manager cannot share information. Although they look similar (both Chromium) they are not connected in any way.
  • You can easily import Passwords from other Chromium browsers to Wavebox (see below).

Enable the Password Manager

  • Open Settings: Click the Settings (cog) in the lower-left corner.
  • Search 'Passwords & Autofill': Select Passwords & Autofill.
  • Check 'Offer to save passwords': Make sure it’s switched ON to be prompted to save passwords.

Save and Auto-Fill Passwords

  • Log in to a site: Wavebox will prompt you to save your credentials.
  • Click 'Save': Once saved, Wavebox auto-fills on your next visit.
  • Manually add a password: In Password Manager settings, select Add, then fill in the site URL, username, and password.

Import from Other Browsers

Direct Import

  1. Open Settings: Click Settings in the lower-left corner.
  2. Import Data: Go to General Tab > Data & Sync > Import from another browser.
  3. Choose Browser: Pick the source browser (e.g., Chrome) from the dropdown.
  4. Check 'Passwords': Confirm it’s selected, then click Import.

CSV Import

  1. Export a CSV: First, export passwords from your old browser as a .csv file.
  2. Open Password Manager: Go to Passwords & Autofill, then Password Manager.
  3. Select Import: In Settings (☰), choose Import.
  4. Upload CSV: Find the .csv file and click Open.

Tips for Staying Signed-In

  • Remember to save passwords to the built-in manager.
  • Always check the "stay signed-in" or "remember me" box when available.

Tips for Advanced Users

  • Master Password (Encryption): Enable Profile Sync with a Master Password to sync credentials across devices securely. It is also used when sharing passwords via Templates or Wavebox Live profiles.
  • Separate Profiles: Create multiple Wavebox Profiles for different sets of saved passwords, such as personal and work.
  • Pin Password Manager: Go to Settings > General Tab > Customize Toolbar > Password Manager to pin it to the toolbar top-right.

Troubleshooting

  • No Save Prompt: In Password Manager settings, ensure Offer to save passwords is ON. If specific sites never prompt, add passwords manually.
  • Auto-Fill Not Working: Check if multiple logins are saved for the same site. Click in the username field to select the correct account.
  • Import Errors: For direct imports, confirm the browser is installed. For CSV imports, ensure the file is formatted correctly (from an official browser export).
  • Forgot Sync Master Password: Wavebox cannot reset it. You must disable the sync and start a new sync with a new master password.
  • Not staying signed in: If you are having to reauthenticate your accounts such as Google Workspace, read our tips for staying signed-in.
  • iCloud Password Extension not working: Please contact support for further details.
